LED panel lights are one of the highest-volume commercial lighting categories in the world. For wholesalers and project buyers, choosing between edge-lit, backlit and frameless panels comes down to four practical factors: efficacy, thickness, glare control and per-unit cost.
Edge-lit panels mount LEDs along the edges, and a light-guide plate (LGP) routes the photons across the panel. The result is a very thin fixture (typically 9–11 mm) with smooth, uniform luminance — ideal for office T-bar ceilings where slim profile matters.
Backlit panels use a direct-emission LED matrix behind a diffuser. They are slightly thicker (typically 25–40 mm), but they reach higher efficacy (up to 130 lm/W) and lower cost-per-lumen. For warehouses, retail and value-engineered projects, backlit is often the better economic choice.
Frameless panels are an aesthetic choice. The borderless edge gives architectural interiors a clean look. Mounting hardware moves to magnetic strips or recessed flanges. Expect to pay a 10–20% premium for the look.
When buying for stock or for a multi-market distribution channel, our recommendation: stock backlit as the value tier, edge-lit as the premium office tier, and frameless for architectural projects.
