Ingress Protection (IP) ratings come from IEC 60529 and describe how well an enclosure resists dust and water. The two digits matter: first is dust, second is water.

IP65 means dust-tight and protected against low-pressure water jets from any direction. Suitable for general indoor humidity, light outdoor exposure (covered walkways), and most warehouses.

IP66 raises the bar to powerful water jets. Useful for outdoor-exposed walkways, parking garages with washdown, and humid environments like swimming pools.

IP69K is a special standard from ISO 20653 — it tests close-range high-pressure, high-temperature jet washing (80°C, 80–100 bar). This is what food-processing plants and cold-chain warehouses need.

For most general industrial applications, IP65 is sufficient and saves money. Reach for IP66 or IP69K when washdown is a daily reality.

Is IP69K really necessary for a standard warehouse?

No. Standard dry warehouses run IP65 perfectly fine. IP69K is designed for environments where fixtures are jet-washed at 80°C and 80–100 bar — food-processing plants, slaughterhouses, dairy facilities. Specifying IP69K everywhere wastes 25–40% of your lighting budget.

What does the K in IP69K mean?

The K is added by ISO 20653 (originally for automotive applications) to mark the close-range high-pressure, high-temperature jet-wash test. Regular IEC 60529 (which gives IP65 and IP66) does not have a K rating — IP69K is a separate test standard layered on top.

Can a fixture be both IP66 and IP65?

Effectively yes — IP66 implies IP65 because the water-jet test in IP66 is more demanding than in IP65. A fixture certified IP66 is implicitly compliant with IP65, although some buyers prefer to see both ratings listed for purchasing-system clarity.
